Learn more about the Parisian districts

Departments are part of the legacies of the Revolution. They replaced the generalities of the Ancien Régime, which had become unpopular in 1795. The aim of the new authorities was to set up administrative districts that were geographically closer to the citizens - at the time, the citizens were supposed to be able to reach their chief town in a maximum of one day...

As far as Paris is concerned, it was not until 1859 that the number of its arrondissements reached twenty. The very first was the Louvre, around the Halles district. The last arrondissement to be formed was in the east of the city, around the vast Père-Lachaise cemetery. La Défense is sometimes considered as the 21e arrondissement of Paris; it is the most prosperous sector of the city, and is perfectly aligned with the axis of the Champs-Elysées.
